Short Bio

Dr. Sandra Soto-Cabán

A native from Puerto Rico, Dr. Sandra Soto Cabán has spent most of her professional career as a college professor in Electrical Engineering. In 2008 she joined Muskingum University in New Concord, OH as the first engineering faculty member of the newly created Engineering Science program. At Muskingum, she teaches several engineering courses and conducts research in the fields of electromagnetics and engineering education. As a member of an underrepresented group in her field, she is a strong advocate for women participation in STEM.

Sandra is a first-generation college student who received her Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, and her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University. She’s a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), member of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), and member of the Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honor societies.

Sandra was born in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico and is currently married to Ferdinand Avila Medina. She has three kids: Ferdinand, Fernando and Frances.
